Take one session, or both. $75. a day. Max. students 15, minimum 10.
First Session: April 15, 2010. Time 9:30 to 3:30 pm.
If you see it, you can draw it!
The challenge of observational drawing.
Spend the day brushing up on your drawing skills, learning new “tricks of the trade”, and sharpening your powers of observation. Using traditional still life objects, as well as natural forms, we will explore new approaches to drawing what we see. We will learn to use sighting sticks and view finders in several different ways, and, through a series of graduated exercises we will explore methods to accurately depict proportion, perspective and unusual foreshortening situations. Using only graphite, and three values, we will add form and volume to our collection of drawing “tricks”. By the end of the workshop you will be more confident drawing a wide variety of subject matter accurately and quickly.

Second Session: May 13, 2010
Composing a landscape in line, value and shape
Get ready for spring by perfecting your composition and design skills. The arrangement of line, shape and space in artwork is an art form in itself and the difference between a pleasant picture and amazing artwork is often found in composition. Structured exercises will help us to trust our intuition and develop new ways to approach perspective, proportion and point of view. By using devices such as cropping, framing and pattern identification we will learn to simplify and strengthen our drawings. A careful study of value in the landscape will add atmosphere and emotion to our work. Finally, a variety of images from various resource materials will give us the building blocks to create our own unique landscapes.
Plan on bringing an 11X14.drawing pad (Strathmore has a good one in its 400 series), several #2 pencils, a kneaded eraser and a pencil sharpener to both sessions. Pack a lunch, a drink and several snacks. Those joining the “composition” workshop should also bring a few landscape photos with them (either photos they have taken themselves or those clipped from magazines).
